The Swedish Emigrant Institute / House of Emigrants in Växjöm, since 1965  is a private foundation on the topic of Swedish emigration to the US and other countries from about 1850 to 1930 supported by the local authorities and the government. The archives holds records from Swedish church archives, passenger lists, Swedish - American church records, US Census, and other information in data bases. The library holds about 25,000 volumes on the topic of emigration. The museum also has permanent exhibitions and a cafe. There are concerts and conferences in the Atrium Hall.

The House of Emigrants
Situated on a picturesque lake in the heart of Växjö, the House of Emigrants comprises an archive, library, museum, and research center.
It also sponsors conferences and seminars, as well as celebrations, festivals, and temporary exhibitions with the themes of emigration and immigration.

"The Dream of America"
The backbone of the permanent exhibits is called "The Dream of America", with pictures, models, statistics, sound recordings and artifacts that reflect the background, cause and result of Swedish emigration to America. The exhibit is divided into "themes" with rubrics such as "the background", "the journey" and "Swedish-America". "The Dream of America" is supplemented by a variaty of exhibitions on themes like The Snoose Boulevard, Titanic, Charles Lindbergh. On top of this seasonal exhibitions are produced or on loan. The goal is to offer the visitors something new each exhibition season.
There is a journal called Emigranten in two editions per year describing the Institute and its Friendship Society.
