Norwegian Emigration Center
The Center help people find their heritage, or living relatives, but in recent years, much of resources has been used for teaching and larger projects, which helps us understand the connection between yesterday's emigration and today's immigration. This is the core of our European Capital of Culture project for 2008 called Youth and Migration - YAM2008.
The Center also cheerishes the Norwegian emigration history. That is why the "Migrasjon Rogaland" project was started. This collaborating project is currently building a replica of the famous Norwegian emigrant ship "Restauration," which in 1825 left the city of Stavanger with 52 people bound for the New World.
The Center is part of an international network of research and genealogy centers and can therefore offer a range of activities to all people of Norwegian descent interested in emigration history and genealogy.
People on the Move
The Norwegian Emigration Center is hosting a permanent exhibition that was officially opened on July 4th 2000, in commemoration of the 175th Anniversary of Norwegian emigration to America. It gives a rough overview of the emigration from Norway, but since emigration was an experience shared by many countries, it has a European perspective. The exhibition is called People on the Move.
