German Emigration Center
The German Emigration Center opened in Bremerhaven on August 8, 2005. The museum’s concept focuses on three main aspects:
the main exhibition on the topic of historical emigration, the Forum Migration as well as special exhibitions and events.
The visitors are taken on a tour through history based on the biography of an individual emigrant. The electronic admission ticket, the so-called “boarding pass” allows the visitor access various biography audio stations containing the life story of the emigrant and the history of his or her family, including living descendants, up through today. Further media stations contain information on social background and circumstances of that time.
The second part of the museums’ tour is allocated to the aspects of current global migration with the main focus on the Federal Republic of Germany as an emigration and immigration country. In our Forum Migration international data bases are available which allow visitors to search for their emigrated ancestors.
The museum is run by a public private partnership and has the focus on the historical emigration from Bremerhaven into the world. In 2007 the museums awarded as the European Museum of the Year 2007.
