DOMiT and Migrations Museum

Since 1990, DOMiT has been collecting documents and material concerning the history of migration to Germany
Since 1990, DOMiT – the Documentation Center and Museum of Migration in Germany – has been collecting documents and material concerning the history of migration to Germany. Originally, immigrants had founded a "Center for Documentation and Museum on Migration from Turkey", focusing on labor migration from Turkey. Since 2002, this social–historical and cultural-historical collection has been expanded – now also including documents and material on migration from the states of origin of "guest workers" as well as "contract workers". The result is a unique collection on the the history of immigration to Germany from Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, ex-Yugoslavia, Morocco, Tunisia, South Korea, Vietnam, Mozambique, and Angola.

DOMiT’s goal is to preserve the heritage of the immigrants for future generations and to make it publically accessible – for research as well as for self-ascertainment. The immigration experience has not only shaped immigrants and their offspring but also German society. Migration history is an important part of German social history. Its documentation is therefore also essential for the majority of German society.
