40 Years of Homeland Abroad
The exhibition "40 Years of Homeland Abroad – immigration from Turkey to Cologne. 40 Yıl Almanya - Yaban, Sılan olur." was shown for the first time in October and November 2001 in the historic city hall of Cologne. It had been developed from the bilingual exhibition "Homeland Abroad. A history of the immigration from Turkey" which was on display in 1998 at the Ruhrland Museum in Essen.
"Homeland Abroad. Immigration from Turkey to Cologne" tells the story of immigration from the perspective of so called "guest workers", their neighbors, friends and colleagues. Both the exhibition and the catalogue are bilingual (German/Turkish). They document the conflicting history of immigration from recruitment, life in the worker hostels, work on the assembly line to the settlement of immigrants and the situation of the second and third generations. More than 400 exhibits are on display, mostly personal souvenirs, photos, letters, but also documents by the authorities, employers, associations, as well as items of everyday life.
The exhibition counters some of the prejudices held by native Germans about Turks. It unearths surprising histories of people which do not fit the stereotypes on Muslims that a lot of Germans share. Thus the show contributes to a better understanding between the majority and one of the minorities which has changed the country.
